The Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), commissioned the Foundation for Information Technology Education to perform a survey of Internet users that demographically covered all major business classifications.

The major results of this survey are:

• 85% of those companies using the Internet are using it for inter-company electronic mail.
• More than 75% reported improvements in the way they do business because of more efficient communications and faster access to information.
• 71% of the companies have their own web site running on a separate computer system maintained by an internal Information Technology staff.
• The major concern of this staff is the unauthorized use of company information prompting over 80% of them to install additional security fire walls to protect themselves.
• 75% of the companies had some concerns relating to the non-productive use of the Internet by employees.

To assist companies, AITP is developing a position statement regarding E-mail access and usage.

The Association of Information Technology Professionals is an association of more than 8,000 Information Technology Professionals in the US and Canada and is directly concerned with issues involving the information technology industry and the use of information technology to increase business productivity.
